The deserts Vast, the Mountains High, the Valleys Low.

A coast to coast adventure through the heart of the Hajar Mountains.

Across mountain high and valleys low, this tour has it all.  Over a five-day period you will get to see all of what Oman has to offer.  This trip will take us to the top of both the Western and Eastern Hajar mountain ranges, along pristine sun kissed coast line and white sandy beaches and through Oman’s vast empty deserts and flat lands.  Along the way you will have the opportunity to see local historic land marks, swim in natural rock pools and cool off under glorious waterfalls.

Tour highlights

  • Massive mountain ranges
  • Oman’s ‘Grand Canyon
  • Desert crossing
  • Rock pools and wadi’s
  • Historic monuments

Difficulty level – 3

Intermediate – Expert

The majority of this tour is off-road trails on rocky mountain switch backs and through the sands of the Wahiba desert.  Many of the mountain ascents and descents are very steep with patches of loose gravel and shale.  Most of the mountain trails are dug into mountain sides with huge drop offs.  The sand sections are huge open expanses ranging from flat firm ground to huge dunes.  A route through the sand can be chosen at will depending on how confident you are in the sand and your energy levels.

The tour will not contain any boulder fields and no specific Enduro or MX skills are required.  The desert crossing can be tiring for the inexperienced, so an average level of fitness is recommended.  Due to the nature of the terrain and length of the tour, a support and safety vehicle will shadow us the whole way.  The support truck will carry a spare bike to avoid any delays due to mechanical problems.

Day 1: Salma Plateau and Majlis Al Jinn

After breakfast we will meet for a brief introduction to the tour.  We will then help set up the bikes for your personal preference before getting suited up and heading out on the road. Once out on the road we will pass some breath taking scenery whilst heading for the waterfalls, pools and sinkholes of Wadi Al Arbiyyin, where you will have the chance to go for a hike and swim in the amazing  natural pools of As Suwayh.  After lunch we head back out on the trail to the steep mountain ascents of Salma Plateau to visit the beehive tombs and Majlis Al Jinn.  The way back down is breath-taking not only for its fantastic views, but also the fun of going down 40% gradient roads and tracks.

After you have given yourself a pat on the back, it’s a short ride to the Hotel in tour for a well-earned lounge by the pool with a cold beverage.

Day 2: The road to Wahiba Sands

We head out back on the trail to pick up the mountain pass over the Eastern Hajar mountains through Wadi Khabba and Wadi Naam.  Here you will see some spectacular changes in scenery from huge mountain ranges to a change in the rock formations themselves.  On the way back down we get to splash through the Wadi’s before having lunch in Ibra.  After lunch it’s a short ride the the deserts of Wahiba Sands.  We will blast through the old Bedouin trails to our desert camp for the night.  Once at camp you will have some time to play in the dunes, go for a camel ride, take a hair raising mini tour with a local 4×4 guide, or simply chill by the pool.

Day 3: The Wahiba crossing

Sand, Sand, Sand.  Not everyone loves it but fear not.  There a several routes across the desert with varying degrees of difficulty.  If you are not comfortable with crossing the dunes, we can take the far easier Bedouin trails across the desert.  Once across, it’s time for swim in the sea before pressing north along the coast to the Hotel.  For the night owls among you and depending on the season, there is the chance to see the turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.

Day 4: The trail to Nizwa

After a run up the coast we hit the trails again. A fantastic run through Wadi Bani Khalid on through Ulya to our final destination for the day in Nizwa. Depending on energy levels, we will have time to explore the many caves, rock pools and canyons along the way.

Day 5: Exploring the Western Hajar mountains - Jebal Shams

Without doubt, some of the most spectacular scenery you will see in Oman.  Today is all about massive ascents, enormous cliff faces and steep descents, all done at a slow pace.  Along the way you will get the opportunity to see sparsely populated villages, caves and Oman’s very own version of the Grand Canyon.  After getting through the rough stuff, we hit the road back to Muscat for a well-earned goodbye celebration.
